Stories GATHER Through Relationships: DIGITAL STorytelling on the APY Lands, South Australia

June 1, 2026

Alyssa Mason meets two of her APY aunties. These two powerful storytellers know Alyssa’s family – a reminder that stories journey through kinship and community. Those moments of recognition sit quietly alongside the drawings, becoming part of the three day workshop story.

Stick Mob Studio artists Alyssa Mason and Seraphina Newberry travelled to the APY Lands to spend a week with the Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Education Committee (PYEC) Anangu Resource Development Unit (ARDU). Together with artists from Kaltjiti (Fregon) and Pukatja (Ernabella), they created digital drawings on the themes Feelings and Kapi (water).

The first day was all about telling stories about and drawing strong emotions

The second day was all about telling stories about and drawing ‘kapi’ water

A highlight was having a picnic with everyone on APY Lands. Time slowed. Stories were shared, Country participated.

Visiting community schools and art centres added another layer, revealing the many ways creativity is nurtured across the APY Lands and the important role artists play in keeping stories alive.

Alyssa and Seraphina returned to Mparntwe grateful for the generosity, knowledge and humour shared by the artists and communities of Kaltjiti and Pukatja, and by everyone at PYEC and ARDU who welcomed Stick Mob so warmly.

Palya. Until next time.
