JOURNAL COMMISSION – The Suburban Review #40 UNTRUE

March 19, 2026

For this commission we were interested in pushing illustration beyond “representation” and into something more active, where Country is alive, generative, and relational.

The front cover draws from Declan’s time as a Central Land Council media cadet, reporting with Indigenous Rangers on Warumungu Country during controlled burns.

Rangers spoke about hot and cool burns, and how buffel grass: introduced for pastoral use now fuels intense fires that damage local ecosystems.

This experience raises troubling and familiar questions

In Central Australia, is the cat a feral foe or a domestic companion?
Is buffel grass a pastoral legacy, or a force that suffocates Country’s ability to breathe?
